My mother is an ALgerian woman living in the suburbs of Paris. She is fond of the show. Why am I telling you this ?
Because you must realise how much genius it is to be able to gather people with so many different cultural/religious/linguistic backgrounds behind one show. Only Americans can do something of such a high quality, yet with simple means. What I mean is, we are middle class too here in France, we are struggling too – with different issues, eg racism and hate these days – but also with the same kind of issues the Heck family is always trying to get solved. We also are worrying about make ends meet, about running out of money, about debts, about how are we gonna fix the car engine, how are we gonna pay for food and other stuff and bills. My parents live in quite poor conditions in an old place filled up with wrecked and old stuff – old sofa, old washing machine almost not working, old old car almost dead…

We are recognizing ourselves so much in this show. Not only are we indentifying to this struggle side but also to all the family issues – siblings fighting and rivalries, parents trying to always do the right thing, etc…

So you see, you can be muslim from north africa or born in France of Algerian descents, and identifying to a middle class family from the middlewest and a story that takes place in completely different background that you are not familiar with, and still love the show to bits and identifying yourself to it. Plus we love to learn how people live in America, how another family is struggling just like us at the other side of the planet. We love when frankie starts by “here in the middlewest”, it’s like someone telling you “once upon a time”. I love this part. This family could be us if we ever lived in America. We are in France. One of the only diffrence is the country. All the emotions, plots, stories are the same 🙂

To whoever wrote that show, thanks so so much, this is a beautiful story, we love it here in France, it’s like someone telling our lives stories on screen, but without any lies. This show feels true and realistic. Thanks for gathering all of us around the world around the nice Heck family, thanks for creating a real family show, a show we can all watch together without ever feeling embarrassed by rude words or actions. Thanks for the good laughs, the great plots and characters, thanks for your great job, thanks for this universal show, and keep it up !

Our family loves this show. This is one show I can actually watch with my kids. Patricia Heaton as the mom should win an award for her role, she is so funny. Can’t wait for season 5!
